Panic Attacks Or Butterflies In Your Stomach

Posted by on Jan 10, 2016

When you’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed by physical feelings, remember this…

When you have a panic attack and experience all those feelings in your body like a racing heart, dizziness, feelings in your stomach and shallow breathing? ….well they are exactly the same feelings you would get if you were really excited or received a wonderful surprise like winning the lottery.

Think back to the early days of being in a relationship when your heart races, your stomach flutters like butterflies trapped in side and you feel sick with excitement. Its exactly the same physical sensations but it’s how you respond to those sensations that makes the difference to whether it scares you or makes you happy!

The first thing you can do is to breath.  Focus on your breathing, taking in slow deep breaths for four counts and breathing out for five or six counts.  As you breath all tell yourself that there is nothing to be frightened of these are just the sensations I have felt before, I don’t need to try and stop them, nothing bad is going to happen, it hasn’t yet.

Breathing slowly and talking yourself down sends the message to your brain that you are not in danger.

By breathing and allowing the feelings to continue without fighting them the sensations will naturally calm down.  Accept them and they will start to fade, fight them and you will make it worse.

Also remember to paint a gentle smile on your face.  I know this will be the last thing you’ll want to do but it works.  Science have shown that if you smile your brain releases all those wonderful feel good chemicals that help lift you.  Its impossible to smile and feel really bad at the same time, try it!
