WHEATGRASS: WEIGHT LOSS & BETTER HEALTH

A lot of people say that if you drink wheatgrass juice, you will be thinner, you will look younger, you will have better health – the list goes on and on. But are these claims true or just hype?

Fortunately, wheatgrass falls into the ‘superfood’ category. Most people juice it but it is also available in supplement form. So what are the super benefits of drinking wheatgrass juice?

1)      It’s a great source of chlorophyll. Wheatgrass contains very high levels of chlorophyll (the green pigment that gives the grass its vivid green colour). Chlorophyll is known for its blood building and cleansing qualities, as well as its ability to oxygenate and alkalise the blood, a fact that makes it suitable for those who are at risk of heart disease and those who want to keep their heart healthy. Chlorophyll also has the ability to repair damaged tissues, which in turn slows down the process of ageing. It also acts as an antioxidant in a sense that it helps flush toxins and drug deposits in the blood, purifies the liver and reduces the damage the lungs acquire from breathing acid gasses. Wheatgrass contains up to 70% chlorophyll.

2)      It contains lots of helpful enzymes. Enzymes are needed by the body particularly in digestion, metabolism, and the absorption of nutrients coming from food sources. Diets high in processed foods can lead to enzyme deficiency, which promotes a wide range of health problems, such as bloating, constipation, allergies and much more. By drinking wheatgrass juice, you can supply your body with beneficial enzymes that are important for your overall health.

3)      Wheatgrass is a nutritionally complete food. Studies on animals and humans suggest that wheatgrass is a complete food which can sustain growth and development. It is known to obtain the “grass-juice factor” which has been shown to keep herbivorous animals alive practically indefinitely. It has a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, as well as dozens of trace elements.

4)      It’s an excellent skin cleaner. If you grow wheatgrass in your garden, you are less likely to have problems with your skin health. Simply pour the juice in a tub of warm water and soak for 15 to 20 minutes, and rinse off with cold water. This natural cleanser can be easily absorbed by your skin so you can expect to see the results almost immediately.

5)      It has anti-radiation effects. Studies suggest that consuming chlorophyll-rich foods can help lessen the effects of radiation in the body. Wheatgrass specifically contains Superoxide Dismutase – an enzyme that has the ability to repair cell damage caused by free radicals, and is 3,500 more effective at that task than Vitamin C.

6)      It has anti-inflammatory properties too. Wheatgrass has high alkalinity properties, which make it a perfect diet addition for people suffering from inflammatory ailments, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

7)      It helps ward off bad breath and body odour. This green juice is good at cleaning the lymphatic system and gastro-intestines, which contributes to the reduction of bad breath and body odour.

8)      Wheatgrass is high in protein. If you’re into bodybuilding, you should put wheatgrass juice on top of your to-drink list. The green juice contains a long chain of amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. In fact, wheatgrass has almost three times more protein than beef! So forget about protein powder. Just drink wheatgrass juice every day.

9)      It may help prevent cancer. The chlorophyll plus the beta-carotene in wheatgrass are beneficial in fighting and preventing cancer. It is a haven of powerful anti-oxidants and anti-cancer agents, and studies indicate a 40% reduction in the risk of developing cancer. For example, a 2002 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, it was found that patients diagnosed with active distal ulcerative colitis who drank wheatgrass juice for a month showed a significant reduction in disease activity. Similar results were shown among patients with breast cancer.

10)   It aids in weight loss. Because it is a nutritionally complete food, drinking wheatgrass juice daily can help ward off food cravings, thus reducing your likelihood to overeat.

But remember, wheatgrass is such a powerful cleanser that it may kick-start healing reactions almost immediately upon drinking. You may want to start with an ounce-shot a day and slowly work up to your tolerance level. Whilst it is more convenient to use the powder form, nothing beats fresh wheatgrass. Find a good quality juicer so you can extract most of the juice and nutrients wheatgrass has to offer.
